Can you have more than one calling?
While it seems to me that you can have multiple expressions, multiple assignments that reflect your calling, I don’t believe that your core calling changes. My opinion is that we do not have multiple callings. True, as you mature and gain understanding, your sense of what your calling is will likely change. But I think such “changes” are more a refinement of what already is than a change of calling. A better grasp and understanding of your unique purpose.
Doctor or healer?
Let me illustrate by way of an example.
Someone may feel that they are called to be a doctor and so gain the schooling and training to become one. Later in life, they find themselves changing jobs and becoming a grief counselor. Both assignments have given them a great deal of satisfaction. Has their calling really changed? I think not.
Roles vs. callings
I think it could be argued that many roles are not callings at all in the truest sense. That the individual in the above example’s calling may be better understood as a “healer” and that the two roles (doctor and grief counselor) are merely assignments wherein this calling can be displayed.
Callings don’t have 9-5 hours either. So this same individual might express his or her calling within their own family in the form of a peacemaker between family members. Or within the community as a mediator, etc.
As long as the various roles you take on are deeply reflective of who you truly are, the more relevant, purposeful and satisfying your life will be!
